This is a fairly short but challenging trail connecting the Left Hand Canyon trail to the pavement of Lefthand Canyon Drive. It is a great option for making a loop out of Left Hand Canyon instead of returning the way you came in.
Castle Gulch runs through and very close to a lot of private property, and there is always the danger that it will be closed. Take care to stay on the trail at all times, and be courteous by not making too much noise.
Most of the trail is a fairly easy climb to the Left Hand Canyon trail. Forest Service road 287.1 is an interesting spur road 1.75 miles from the pavement on your left that takes you to the Victor Mine. It is well-preserved and has lots of interesting colors.
After the mine you are treated to a section of loose rocks that move underneath your tires, making the trip challenging. This section could be quite difficult for a stock vehicle, and it could be very difficult in snow or mud.
Once you get to the top you will intersect with the Left Hand Canyon trail. Turn right to continue down to the trailhead for that trail.
