Located in the Mojave Desert round the west edge of San Bernardino County near the Los Angeles County Line is the El Mirage OHV Area, also known as Shadow Mountains.

This is a total area of 24,000 acres including the private and public lands with elevations beginning from 2,800 at the El Mirage Dry Lake to 3,800 feet in the Shadow Mountains.

Summers can peak at 120 degrees F along with thunderstorms. Winter can be freezing upto 5 degress F at night with highs between 60 to 70 degrees. The best time to visit is Spring and Fall which enjoy moderate temperatures.

Areas of Interest[edit]

Within the El Mirage OHV area, there are some prominent places which you must visit.

El Mirage Lakebed 
An amazing natural undrained basin having the right surface for activities like ultra light aircraft and gyrocopter flying, model rocketry, remote control airplane flying, land sailing and straight track racing.
The Basin 
Lying in between the Shadow Mountain and the lakebed this valley is filled with creosote bushed and has deep dry washes. This is a favourite for OHV activities.
Shadow Mountains 
A range of mountains that pass through the east and centre of the main access of Mountain View Road. They form a border to the riding area towards the north.
Twin Hills 
Located towards the east of the riding area nestled inside the Little Shadow Mountain group and US Highway 395. This is a great place to indulge in light riding amidst the small hills.

Directions[edit]

The El Mirage OHV riding area is located west of Adelanto, California, between US Highway 395 and the Los Angeles County line. Most visitors enter from US Highway 395 near Adelanto by taking Chamberlaine Way (formerly Crippen Avenue) west to Koala Road. Turn right on Koala Road and follow the signs toward the town of El Mirage. At El Mirage Road, turn left. Just east of the town of El Mirage, take Mountain View Road north to enter the El Mirage OHV Recreation Area. A sign located at this intersection will direct you to the recreation area.

If you are coming from Palmdale, take Palmdale Boulevard eastbound and turn north (left) at 240 th Street . Turn east (right) at Avenue P. At the San Bernardino County line, Avenue P becomes El Mirage Road. Follow El Mirage Road through the town of El Mirage. Just east of the town of El Mirage, take Mountain View Road north to enter the El Mirage OHV Recreation Area. A sign located at the intersection will direct you to the recreation area
